I'm currently in a VA community college. My grades were really really low in the beginning but in the last two semesters, i've been getting B's and C's. As of right now, it's 2.25.

I was wondering which schools I can apply to for a journalism program. (I'm looking for either Seattle, Chicago or New York) I know it's a weak GPA and since i'm applying for the spring semester (unless some schools allow me to apply for the fall) I can probably squeeze in one more semester but i would have to apply before it starts so my GPA will stay the same.

Help !

Answer:The fact that you've been doing better is in your favor. Have you been getting any journalism related experience while you've been at the community college? I'd like you to do that. Take journalism-related classes, if they're offered – from writing to tv production. Get involved in the campus paper, if there is one, as well as in the radio station and etc., if one exists. Volunteer to write the court reports or police beat for your local (town) weekly paper – maybe even do a formal internship, if you can. This sort of experience will help your application, and since your GPA is just so-so, doing things like this can really help strengthen your application.

I really think you could get into Columbia College Chicago, and that's a good communications-related fields school. It's not a terribly hard college to get into at all, but the academics there are solid. It could be a good fit. Loyola Chicago is a reach school, but not impossible for you.

Out in WA State, I'm thinking you stand a shot at Gonzaga, Evergreen State U, and Walla Walla U. Now, I don't know WA State, so I have no idea how close any of these are to Seattle, so you'll need to judge if they're a fit.

In NY, I'm thinking you might really want to look at Ithaca. They aren't in the city, but they're a good school in your field. In the city is Long Island U. Utica is not near the city, but I think you could get in there.

Of those I listed, I really, really think you'll get into Columbia College Chicago, Long Island U, Evergreen State. If you like any of those schools, definately apply, because I think you stand a very strong shot at them. The others I listed, you should apply – and do look at Ithaca. They're a bit more of a reach school for you, but not impossible for you to get into.
