I have a worksheet on the grapes of wrath by john steinbeck. i need to charactrize ma joad, but that character i have a hard time understanding. i'v already done the analysis for tom joad and jim casy. i just don't understand this character at all. can someone please explain to me some of the characterizations that john steinbeck presents in this novel for ma joad? (please dont say that i just want people do do my homework because i'v already done the other two, and i still would have to find quotes to support the characterizations after the explanations on here. this is just so that i understand her personality so i can do the analysis.) thanks so much in advance.
Answer:Ma Joad is a symbol of a powerful woman in The Grapes of Wrath. When Pa does not know what to do, Ma steps up to the plate and the family switches from the patriarchal to the matriarchal. Ma is also what keeps the family together (there should be a point in the book where Tom says he's going to stay with the broken car but Ma insists they stay with him because she doesn't want her family to be separated).
There are other things about Ma, but this is the major thing about her.
