I'm having an algebra problem I just can't seem to solve. Please Help Me!

the problem 5r-(2r 8)=16.

I tried multiplying 5r to (2r but that diden't work at all. the truth is I don't know what I'm doing.

Please Help.

3r -8 = 16

3r = 24

r = 8.
