I'm starting college in the fall and was wondering what kind of assignments professors give. Everyone keeps telling me that college is nothing like high school. So do they give daily assignments, papers, just reading? I'm really curious?
Answer:You never know unless you talk to other students first about which professors to take.
I have had professors that tell us to take every other week off and "read the book" so we would know what was in it.
I have had professors who wanted us to hand in assignments every class (very few, actually only two)
Most professors give you a syllabus the first day of class that details all assignments due and when tests are. The typical format at all 3 colleges that i have attended is that you have 3 tests and 1 paper due per class. This seems to be the toughest thing for high school students to get used to is that you only have 4 grades for an entire class. Usually the 3 tests are just over material that is recently covered. Out of the nearly 50 classes that i have taken i have had a comprehensive final only once, and it was in college algebra and was actually optional for those of us who wanted to raise our grade (yeah sometimes you get the nutty professor that gives an optional final for those students not happy with their grade i have had this maybe 5 times) The papers are usually 3 pages in length, require one source from the library and the rest can be internet sources. You always get a 100 on papers unless you just copy and past the wikipedia in which case you will more than likely get kicked out for the semester (i have seen it happen) Its cool because the paper helps bring your test grades up.
On occasion you will have the professor that wants you to read the book, i have had 3 that did out of almost 50 classes. All professors will tell you to read the book, but when you ask them whether tests are taken from the lecture or the book almost all will say lecture. In fact if you have a cool prof you might want to ask them sometime if they have read the book, most will say they have, but a few will laugh and admit that neither they nor anyone they know has ever read the book, and they only follow the form of the book by reading the chapter titles. The bad thing is that you have to buy books for every class. For some reason professors will often give out "extra credit" when they have done a particular crappy job of making a test and most everyone failed it. The extra credit usually is to open up chapter xx and do the questions at the end of the chapter and email them to the professor. Those that do get a 100 those that dont get to keep their crappy test grade.
Answer:Yep, reading the book and other resources, math problem sets, essays, and projects.
