I hope to major in Speech Pathology and Audiology at Miami University. Upon graduation, I'd prefer to work with stroke victims. What are the best minors to accompany this major?
Choosing from the university's list, I thought a minor in Linguistics, Neuroscience, Special Education, Gerontology, or Sociology would by most helpful. Which would you suggest and why? Would you suggest another minor?
Answer:Neuroscience is the best option, as speech pathology is heavily reliant on neuroanatomy and physiology.
Most of our work in a medical setting is with neurologically impaired patients, from stroke and traumatic brain injury, to progressive neurological diseases. I relied on my knowledge of neuroscience to guide me to diagnoses, prognostic statements, and treatment goals.
You will get most of what you need to know about gerontology when you do your clinical fellowship (CFY).
Answer:I would suggest a minor in psychology so that you will learn how to gain insight into how your clients may be seeing your work and why they may be cooperating or not cooperating with you.
Sociology is the study of the behavior of social groups. Linguistics is the analysis of language, but its technical side goes in a different direction than what you would need. Gerontology studies the aging process and the relationship of the elderly to society, which again is not the direction you're going. Your other two suggested minors may be helpful.
Answer:Gerontology or one of the social sciences would seem to be the most beneficial to me. With gerontology you will learn about our aging population, and the special needs that they have. The social sciences will help you address the specific needs of baby boomers who will be your primary patients, and might give you a different outlook on this population.
