Surely it is wrong to teach little children about gods and other lies meant to control them. I understand that in the UK you teach religion, in the USA we don't. If I wanted my child to keep their mind pure and unsullied by idead of sky creatures, underground punishment chambers and all manor of fictional creatures inbetween is that not my right.
Answer:There are good teachers who teach children about all religions, which encourges understanding and respect between different cultures. What worries me is teachers who teach their own values as the 'RIGHT' values, whether these be religious values or not. For example the teacher who told my 13 years old's class that there was "something wrong" with them if they were not sexual active at their age.
Answer:I don't think you're right when you say in the USA you don't. I believe in some states creationism is taught with the same weight as evolution which I find far worse than any religious studies in the UK.
I am not christened or brought up religiously. I had religious education when I was at school, but it did not teach us one religion was the right one. In fact I learnt different aspects of Christianity, Islam and Judaism. I was taught to respect the beliefs even if it was not one that I shared and I think the world would be a better place if everyone lived by that rule.

Answer:We do teach religion but the idea is to give kids a broad knowledge of different religions rather than indoctrinating them into a single one.
I personally like this approach. It allows children to see that there are ways of belief other than the one foisted on them by their immediate family and gives an understanding that is hopefully free of some of the inter-religious hysteria that seems to go around alot these days.
Not teaching religion would be a bit like not teaching history or geography, it is an important part of understaning the world (and people) around us.
Answer:While you should not teach them lies to control them, they need some sort of background in something so they can choose. A completely unsullied mind has nothing to compare ideas to.
It would be like sending a kid to university and telling him to choose a major, but not give him any idea what each major would involve.
Answer:In the UK we do teach religion, and at primary school age, they get taught little snippets of all the major religions. The focus is on Christianity though as we are a predominately Christian country. We do have the right to remove our children from religious worship if we choose, but most parents do not do this. I have always found that my children have come home from various days where they have done projects on a particular festival etc with no more/less enthusiasm for the topic than for any history or geography topic they have done.
I have taught my children that it is ok if they do or do not believe in religion, that they do not have to say the prayers in assemblies etc if that is their choice, but what they do have to do is stand quietly and listen and respect other people's beliefs. Your child's mind is not pure and unsullied if they are exposed to the real world, or to tv as they will pick up all sorts of messages and ideas from other people/tv. Teaching them to repect others, and to be tolerant, and allowing them to be curious and ask questions about the world is far more important and allows them to absorb all sorts of information form whatever sources in a way that does not control them but expands their horizons and views.
