Ive got a few interviews coming up and am a bit rusty in the interview department. I really want this type of job as its very rewarding (and im getting married this year) and although I have worked with special needs for the last 4yrs I really want to work in a classroom setting. Can you please help me to prepare some possible answers. Thx
1) How would you help a child with literacy and reading difficulties?
2) A pupil has written a story on the computer and wants to take it home to show his parents, however there are a lot of spelling mistakes. What do you do and how can you help rectify these mistakes?
3) Senario: A child with special educational needs comes to you crying because other children have laughed at him and called him stupid. How do you reassure this child?
I would appreciate some help with these questions that I got asked at interview recently. Im not sure if I answered them to my best so would appreciate if someone could help me expand on my answers for the next time.
If there are other questions or senarios I could be asked I would appreciate your comments on those also. Thx
Answer:Here's some interview questions I was asked.
"The teacher is doing something that you disagree with, what would you do?" Hopefully you'd have the sense to stay quiet until you could talk to the teacher privately and ask for clarification. The teacher should know more and have a reason for the course of action. You would ask her/him "I don't understand why …..could you explain it to me?" coming from the POV that you're there to assist and learn.
"The teacher is doing something you know is completely wrong, how would you handle it?" In that case you need to call your supervisor and explain what's going on. I've actually had to do this, though it was a substitute, not my regular teacher. I've had to have substitutes removed from duty and banned from our class for misconduct.
"You're alone with several children in class and one starts having a seizure, what do you do?"
Make sure the child is safe and can't hurt themselves. Call for help
As for your questions, number one should be addressed by his IEP. One on one reading stories together at the child's level, following teachers instructions regarding reading programs you should be using, etc.
Question 2, I would ask the teacher. If the teacher was unavailable, I would print a copy first. The teacher might want an original dated copy for the child's file (I know my teacher would) that way you would have a baseline writing sample. I would then talk to the child about spelling mistakes, and help him/her with the errors. Sounding out the words and asking "what letters make the …… sound. Usually processing programs auto correct or underline mistakes. After working with some spelling errors, show him/her how the program works, and how to use the spell check program.
Question 3. First I would have the child explain to me what happened. Then I would reassure the child that he is not stupid. Talk about the areas where his skills are strong. Be it academic, artistic, athletic. Explain how ALL kids have areas of strength and weakness. Johnny needs help in math, but he's an excellent reader. You are great in math but need help reading.
Good luck!
Answer:1) How would you help a child with literacy and reading difficulties?
Encourage a child to read. Give them breaks every 10 minutes. Then return back to work every 3 minutes. It shows that they earned a break in between each session. Students with disabilities get overwhelmed with work and feel to give up. That's why its important to give them frequent breaks.
2) A pupil has written a story on the computer and wants to take it home to show his parents, however there are a lot of spelling mistakes. What do you do and how can you help rectify these mistakes?
I would go over the story with them. Read what they have written out loud. Take a few minutes with them to think over the word with them. Take out dictionary or go to the chalkboard to figure it out. Children or Students make mistakes. Even adults make spelling mistakes. Its no big deal.
3) Scenario: A child with special educational needs comes to you crying because other children have laughed at him and called him stupid. How do you reassure this child?
I would ask the student to tell me who was giving them a hard time. Then take the student with bullying behavior out of the classroom for verbal discipline. Though I would not take away that students recess because of a miss behavior. The student who troubled the other one I would put them in the hallway or corner for a time out.
